Why this project exists
FirstTable explored furniture as an engineering and design problem. A desk must fit a person and a room, carry equipment without uncomfortable movement, route around obstructions, and be practical to build.
The project began in CAD, where proportions and structural relationships could be tested before material was cut.
02 / Approach
How the problem was framed
The design process considered the work surface, leg placement, spans, joints, and assembly sequence. Useful furniture also needs room for fasteners and tools, tolerance for imperfect floors, and a path for moving the finished object through doors.
CAD makes geometry easy to adjust, but material behavior and joint stiffness still require physical judgment. Grain direction, panel thickness, bracing, edge treatment, and finish all affect the final object.
03 / Result
What exists now
The project is retained as an early furniture design and build record. The archive does not contain enough verified detail to list dimensions, materials, or measured load capacity.
Its importance lies in moving from unconstrained modeling toward an object governed by the body, available space, purchased material, and fabrication sequence.
04 / Reflection
Lessons and next steps
Furniture teaches scale immediately: a few centimeters can change comfort, knee clearance, or stability. Designing the order of assembly is as important as drawing the final shape.
A future revision would begin with ergonomic measurements, define load and deflection targets, prototype the joint, and produce a cut list and drawing set before fabrication.
