Why this project exists
Project PL8 began as a systems problem rather than a styling exercise: define what the vehicle must do, divide that intent into workable subsystems, and keep those decisions connected as the design matures. The program brings chassis architecture, packaging, materials, fabrication, and team coordination into one long-running engineering effort.
The proposed basalt-fiber construction makes material behavior and manufacturing constraints central to the design. Instead of treating the body as a shell added later, the monocoque-style concept asks structure, ergonomics, service access, and tooling to be considered together from the start.
02 / Approach
How the problem was framed
The work is organized around requirements, interfaces, and design reviews. Vehicle targets become subsystem questions - occupant package, load paths, suspension hard points, drivetrain space, and manufacturable composite geometry - before detailed CAD is allowed to lock in the architecture.
A student team adds another engineering layer: scopes must be small enough to finish, assumptions must be recorded, and decisions must remain legible to new contributors. Program leadership therefore includes documentation, task ownership, review cadence, and protecting the overall vehicle concept from disconnected local optimizations.

What exists now
PL8 remains an active program. Its value so far is the integrated framework it has created: a vehicle concept tied to material research, structural thinking, and a practical path toward fabrication rather than a collection of unrelated parts.
Because the program is ongoing, this page describes the engineering direction and working method - not a claim that a finished vehicle has been validated. Major design choices will continue to change as analysis, resources, and physical testing provide better evidence.

Lessons and next steps
Large projects move forward when ambiguous ambitions are converted into explicit interfaces and reviewable decisions. PL8 has reinforced the importance of requirements, configuration control, and designing for the actual capabilities of the team.
The next phase is to deepen the evidence behind critical choices, continue subsystem integration, and use progressively higher-fidelity prototypes to retire risk before committing to expensive tooling or full structures.
